DOES THIS THING REALLY WORK? | Dog slow feeder test

IMG_2111I have been looking at slow feeders for a while as Maple is of course a quick eater and honestly she hoovers food up! Gone in a flash.

I have always wanted to get one but of course we have to buy 2 for Hunter & Maple and some are a bit pricey and the question i’ve always had… do they even work?

So i popped to petsathome and picked out 3 different types to try out.

    1. Outward Hound Fun Feeder Dog Bowl Mini – £15
    2. Cool Club Slow Down Feeder Pet Bowl – £9
    3. Slodog Slow Feeder Plate -£10

To make the test fair, both Hunter & Maple were timed on their normal bowls and the slow feeders with a mean time decided after a few days of testing (101g of their normal Gurupetfood weighed throughout).

Hunter & Maples times on their normal round bowls

Hunter:  ’00:17.92 seconds’  |  Maples: ’00:29:00 seconds’

Slodog Slow Feeder Plate (Pink)

This was actually the first one i tried thinking it maybe better but actually this was the worst one. On the packaging of this large slow feeder play it says ‘Slow your dog’s feeding from seconds to many minutes’ – for Maple it made her slower by only 6 seconds… which to me is rubbish when it suggests minutes….

Brand: Slodog
Price: £10
Dishwasher safe: No
Would i recommend: No

Food timings:
Hunter ’00:47:40 seconds’  |  Maple ’00:35:32 seconds’

Cool Club Slow Down Feeder Pet Bowl (Orange)

This one is new to petsathome in the summer range and seems to work ok for even Maple, with her getting over 1 minute each time, it’s not too bad! I personally don’t like the silicone as putting it from worktop to floor you have to be careful not spilling food everywhere.

Brand: Petsathome
Price: £9
Dishwasher safe: No
Would i recommend: Yes – its a ok option for under £10

Food timings:
Hunter ‘01:12:56 seconds’  |  Maple ‘01:05:36 seconds’

Outward Hound Fun Feeder Dog Bowl Mini

This one was the higher priced out of the 3 we tried and on the package it boasted ‘x10 slower’ and veterinarian recommended.. Hunter is actually x4 times slower which is great in itself but not x10…. I can say this is a firm favourite! With a non-slip base and easy to sprinkle the food round they both took over 2 minutes. Cleaning it was easier than i thought as a sponge goes into the sides perfectly and its also dishwasher safe. They also have a bigger size option available.

Brand: Petsathome
Price: £15
Dishwasher safe: Yes
Would i recommend: Yes! Both of them got over 2 minutes each

Food timings:
Hunter ‘02:46:14 seconds’  |  Maple ‘02:06:20 seconds’
