We love a waxed dog coat for Hunter & Maple for any occasion, to keep the chill off or just for looking dapper out on any walk.
We already owned a Barbour waxed dog coat which we bought over 2 years ago and has been worn a handful of times. The Barbour coats were bought for £39.95 in the olive colour.
We decided to see if we could find any coats similar and find out the cost, quality and the look and feel of the coat and see if anything compares to the Barbour.
We found 2 waxed coats online from different companies costing just £12.99 each.
First thing i did was test out the wax cotton they should all really be shower proof (not completely rain proof) so i splashed tap water on and waited for 5 minutes.
The Aldi coat soaked up the water while Rydale & Barbour coats water just beaded on top of the waxed cotton.
Hunter & Maples measurements are basically the same apart from Hunter has a longer back & legs. Working with knowledge these are Hunters measurements:
Find out below what we thought on each coat and which we feel is worth it.
STYLE 5/5 – Classic design with velcro and buckle support for stomach adjustment, cord collar, velcro neck area and also the leather barbour tag.
FIT/QUALITY 4.5/5 – Barbour has the best fit for both dogs both round the neck area and stomach with the velcro on one of sides and the buckle on the other, it fits perfectly around the stomach for any dog. Shower proof and also great in design the coat has a standard Barbour check on the inner. One thing that most waxed dog coats do is the dirt stays on top of the wax rather than seeping though to the dogs fur. Velcro is sturdy and strong. Noticed after a few wears/rain and wind the colour around the leather tag slightly faded.

STYLE 4/5 – Classic design with buckle support for stomach adjustment, cord collar, velcro neck area.
FIT/QUALITY 3.5/5 – First thing about this coat is it is slightly thicker than the other coats. However the quality of the stitching and velcro is spot on. Unfortunately the sizing didn’t match to hunter or maple as the smaller size was too small and this size is too big for the neck area, perfect length otherwise. This would be a fab coat for just walking on those chiller days with no rain.

STYLE 4/5 – Classic design with buckle support for stomach adjustment, cord collar, velcro neck area. Waxed cotton in appearance doesn’t seem to the same standard as the Barbour.
FIT/QUALITY 4/5 – The Rydale coat does have a great fit in the body length and around the neck area. Shower proof and also great in design the coat has a green check on the inner similar to there humans shirts available. However the only thing that lets this coat down is the stomach buckle area. The buckle for adjustment only has one side insert so its not as secure. The stomach belt could do with being longer to suit this.
